College Athletic Recruiting Process Explained
Levels of Athletic Competition:NCAA [National Collegiate Athletic Association]
NCAA Division I: member schools can offer athletic scholarships which would cover tuition, room and board.
NCAA Division II: member schools can offer athletic scholarships [fewer available than Division I].
NCAA Division III: member schools cannot award athletic scholarships. Schools may grant academic, leadership and other scholarships.
- 3 to 5% of high school athletes nationwide will receive a Division I athletic scholarship
- Often times, Division I & II college coaches offer scholarships to fill specific positional needs
- Division III may use the same approach but also used the "shotgun" method where they actively recruit several candidates for ONE position and then conduct try-outs similar to the HS process of making a team.
The NFHS Learning Center [www.nfhslearn.com] offers an NCAA Eligibility Course free of charge and takes 20-30 minute to complete. This course presents information for the student athlete and what is necessary to participate at member schools.
The NCAA website is also a useful source to provide answers to any questions you or your son/daughter may have.
- Student Athletes tab provides The Guide for the College-Bound Athlete
- College Bound Division I and Division II student athletes need to visit the NCAA Eligibility Center - create an accoount and register
